The Story Behind AFED
A mission shaped by resilience, sacrifice, and the belief that financial capability can change lives.
From Personal Struggle to Professional Purpose
Thami Nyathi
FOUNDER
AFED was founded by Thami Nyathi, whose journey was shaped by hardship, sacrifice, and determination. Raised by a single mother, Joyce Dube, he grew up with a deep understanding of both economic struggle and the transformative power of education.
Joyce Dube worked tirelessly and sacrificed greatly so that her son could remain in school and pursue a better future. She believed education was the pathway out of poverty. Her passing shortly after his high school years left a lasting mark, but also a permanent sense of responsibility.
Driven by the desire not to let his mother’s sacrifices be in vain, Thami persevered through self-study, menial work, and personal hardship to pursue professional qualification. That journey shaped the values behind AFED: dignity, structure, resilience, and the commitment to help others build sustainable economic futures.
Why AFED Was Created
AFED was created from the conviction that talent and effort are not enough when entrepreneurs lack the financial systems, compliance support, and governance structures needed to survive and grow. The organisation exists to provide the kind of structured support that can turn struggle into sustainability.
Honouring Joyce Dube
The Joyce D Foundation exists alongside AFED as a tribute to the legacy of sacrifice, education, and hope represented by Joyce Dube. It reflects the belief that when one person is supported with dignity and opportunity, an entire future can change.
